Global Field Study Experience – China

A group of 11 students from the MBA part time 2014-17 batch and 2015-2018 batch visited China (Beijing & Shanghai) for the Global Field Study (GFS) program of Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi from 25th June – 1st July 2016. The visit included interactions with academia (Shanghai Normal University & CEIBS) and industry (BaoSteel Group & NIIT). The students also attended the Mobile World Congress Exhibition at Shanghai, an exhibition that displayed cutting-edge products and technology that will define the mobile future.

Mr. Xiaoje Bao & Ms. Baohua Yang of School of Finance and Business, Shanghai Normal University helped the visiting students in understanding industrial scenario in China, growth of trade & commerce in recent years, currency related regulations & Legal frameworks. During the 3 day stay in SHNU from 28th June to 30th June, there was immense interaction amongst the local Chinese students and International Students to understand study environment in China, opportunities for higher studies, job scenario and insights into the social, cultural and domestic life. Students also interacted with academia and alumni of CEIBS during the one day session at CEIBS. This session was chaired by Ms Claudia Schäfer, (Deputy Director- Dean’s Office – CEIBS) and students got acquainted with Opportunities, Challenges and threats that exist in doing business with China and how foreign companies can flourish and how foreign companies should go about establishing operations in China. On 1st July, visit to NIIT (Indian IT MNC) office in Shanghai was done where Mr. Kamal Dhuper gave an excellent overview of training and IT capacities and how Indians have an edge particularly in Services sector. More insights were given by him about how NIIT has closely collaborated with Chinese Government authorities for delivering educational services to Institutions and Universities.

The purpose of the GFS program was to enhance understanding of management students related to the global context in which businesses operate and also to expose them to the culture and successful business practices in the technology driven country, which is a vibrant business and manufacturing hub of the World. It was a great learning experience through interactive sessions by some of the brightest minds in academic and industrial sectors.

The study tour was comprehensive in terms of its coverage of aspects of strategy, marketing & entrepreneurship verticals. Also, emphasis was on the political, economic, social and technological differences and similarities of India – China which enabled the group to have an all-inclusive approach towards technology management.

  • Comparative analysis of the Indian and Chinese economies, and
  • Understanding the various aspects of management by having open ended discussions with eminent personalities.
